As part of Haus R in Kitzbühel, designed by A2 Architektur, Formfeld developed and realized a sculptural ceiling surface for the living area on the upper floor. The project features the Formfeld 1 structure, whose three-dimensional relief combines strong visual presence with acoustic performance: the geometry diffusely scatters sound, significantly improving the room’s reverberation time.
The ceiling is made from white lacquered volcanic sandstone. The surface consists of around 7,800 subtle modulations forming a continuous organic geometry without a visible beginning or end. In contrast to previous projects using Formfeld 1, this version is distinguished by its seamless integration into adjacent flat ceiling areas – the geometry softens and fades out toward the edges.
The complexity of the surface was controlled by a custom-developed algorithm that also generated the CNC machining data. A key challenge lay in the precise execution of all transitions: joints between segments and surrounding surfaces were designed to be visually imperceptible.
The project was completed in summer 2023.
